Understanding BioCNG: A Clean Twin of Natural Gas

At its core, BioCNG is biologically derived methane, cleaned and compressed to match the quality and usability of conventional CNG. The process starts with the production of biogas, which is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other impurities. In a well-designed BioCNG facility, the process typically starts with waste collection and segregation. This can be agricultural waste like crop residues and animal manure, municipal waste from households and restaurants, or industrial waste from food processing units and dairies.

Once collected, the waste is fed into anaerobic digesters — sealed, oxygen-free tanks where microorganisms break down organic matter and release biogas. This stage is as much biology as it is engineering, requiring careful temperature control, stirring, and process monitoring.

The raw biogas that emerges from this digestion process is rich in methane but still contains carbon dioxide, water, hydrogen sulfide, and other impurities. It must be purified using a combination of scrubbing, chemical absorption, membranes, or PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption). The goal is to raise the methane content to over 90%, which ensures safe and efficient combustion in CNG-compatible engines.

Once purified, the gas is compressed to 200–250 bar and stored in high-pressure cylinders, ready to be transported or piped into vehicle filling stations. At this stage, the biogas has officially transformed into BioCNG — a clean, portable, and high-energy fuel.
